Caregiver Burnout - Symptoms & Prevention

As a caregiver, you handle many things, situations and issues that you probably did not deal with before you assumed your new role...including possibly caregiver burnout.  Not knowing about a particular condition or subject, not being able to anticipate what the immediate or long-term future holds, not knowing whether you have the stamina to do whatever you are now in charge of, coming to terms with the fact that someone important to you now needs care, or not even knowing what to ask can be overwhelming to anyone.  It’s like the first day at a new job!  Your perspective and attitude will make ALL THE DIFFERENCE!

Everyone starts anything at the beginning.  As a caregiver, arm yourself with information in the priority that it is needed: ask your doctor, nurse, health care professional what is most important to properly care for your loved one.  Ask persons who have experience with the type of situation you are now in.  Explore this website!  The better informed you are, the more confident you will be to handle daily care and the less likely you will reach caregiver burnout.

The time will come when you feel tired, whether it’s physically, mentally or emotionally.  It took me about 2 years to realize that I was not as enthusiastic about my new routine as I was at the beginning.  Sometimes, I dreaded some task simply because I had to do it every day.  From the beginning of your role as a caregiver, you need to take care of yourself.  This doesn’t mean becoming egocentric or narcissistic!  It means exercising common sense and including YOURSELF as someone to take care of.  This means taking mental, emotional or physical breaks every day.  Yes, you’ll need to fit them in when it’s convenient, but make sure that you DO fit one in every day.  I have to “stare at a wall” every night for 10 or so minutes just to let my brain stop thinking about all of the things I need to do the next day, the next week or to make sure that I haven’t forgotten something important.  Make time to do something you enjoy, even if it’s for only a few minutes.  You need to remain strong and healthy so that you can carry out your duties.  This alone can help reduce stress, as it’s no fun taking care of things when you are run down yourself.  The links below have information on caregiver burnout symptoms, prevention and coping strategies in order to avoid it.
