Quite simply, this information can be used to make sure that your wishes regarding your assets, or those of your loved one in care, will be carried out after death. Power of Attorney is given to a trusted person who will make financial decisions for the person who is no longer able to make decisions. Medical Power of Attorney is a separate document and discussed below.

Although an attorney is not always legally required to draw a will in many states, it is advisable to at least consult one. An attorney can recommend ways of phrasing the will so as to minimize or eliminate ambivalence or confusion about the person’s wishes.

Medical Power of Attorney and Advance Directives are a good idea because they can help family members and doctors to carry out a loved one’s wishes, or your own, regarding medical care and alternatives in the event that a person cannot make decisions. Don't let the "unusual" topic delay your Estate Planning, as it will be much more diffcult to address when end of life is near. All articles I have read encourage us to make these important choices now, while we are well and can think clearly. It may be easier to approach the subject with an elder person if it is presented as a way to ensure that his or her wishes are carried out when the time comes.
