Caregiving Long-Distance

You would be surprised at how much can be accomplished from far away!  My husband and I have lived away from family for most of our married life, but we managed to find a way to help family members by caregiving long-distance.  Mostly, we did things by phone or the internet.  Thank Goodness for cell phones and for unlimited long-distance calling plans!

What you can do by phone:  call doctors, medical facilities; make appointments, arrange transportation; get information regarding housing, home care, services, products, etc.; order medicines, products, groceries; update family and friends about someone’s condition or emergency situation; relay important information to those presently at a hospital or medical facility - say treatment or medication  information that you obtained on a reliable website. Oh yes, a simple phone call to see how both family caregiver and caree are doing is always welcome!

What you can do on the internet or on your computer:   research topics, diseases, medications, treatments, doctors, facilities, transportation; order products - mobility or groceries; find service providers; find locations of medical offices to give directions.  Pay bills online or set up autopay; set up online accounts with doctors and other providers to communicate non-urgent concerns; set up appointments; order refills and arrange for home delivery; do taxes [Turbo Tax is great!]; set up personal websites or accounts to update family & friends about caregiving - good news, calls for assistance, serious health matters, etc.; keep track of Personal Health Records [PHR] using various websites or apps; set up a calendar of reminders with deadlines, events, appointments, needs, etc., that those you authorize can see; Skype or facetime!

What you can email:   stay in touch with family and friends to give updates of conditions or events; send information on topics or issues to discuss at a future medical appointment; test results [with patient approval] for family to see and address with medical professionals; send names and phone numbers or links of local service providers; to-do lists for the next day or week; reminders to family or friends involved in caregiving; questions or concerns you may have; bounce around ideas for family involved to think about when a decision is necessary - each member can add input for all to see.

All that is needed for caregiving long-distance is the desire to help even though you are out of town!  Believe me, it is well appreciated by those in town with too much to do and not enough time in which to do it!
