WONDER! LEARN! RECHARGE!

Mental alertness & motivation for caregivers

Do you ever wonder what is happening on the other side of the world?  Or what lies just beyond the horizon? Are you ever curious about your ancestors or about the future of our planet?  Do you ever wonder why... or how... or where...?

Is your world defined by your routine & daily demands, limited by to-do lists & time?  When was the last time you noticed the wildflowers, took in the splendor of a sunset or simply listened?

If you can't remember or if it was longer than a day or so ago, this section is especially for you!

Life today seems to be a whirlwind of demands & activities.  Add to that technology's ability to keep us connected 24/7, globalization of business that brings with it round the clock work days, & perhaps our own feeling that we need to keep working or volunteering.  What you end up with is an exhausting concoction of never-ending commitments, a well-blended smoothie of tasks sprinkled with short breaks covered with business calls or guilt.

When days become a treadmill with no "off" button, it is time to re-evaluate your priorities.  Yes, we all have a million things to do yesterday, but something has to be THE most urgent one & another has to be the least important one.  Taking a look at all that we need to do, prioritizing & getting organized are efficient ways to manage our schedules.  Some tasks can be eliminated entirely, while others can be delegated or postponed until a better time.  And believe it or not, one of the top priorities needs to be YOU!  As in take a little break to recharge, every day.  Think of it as a mini tune-up.  You do it for your car or your car gives you trouble.  Give yourself a little consideration so that you can get motivated to keep doing the great things you do!

A short break from your caregiving routine or work revitalizes your brain, enabling it to produce more for you.  Some studies show that a 10 minute break after every hour of work keeps your brain engaged.  The links below have ways to exercise your brain, helping it to remain focused & sharp, and encouraging renewed motivation for caregivers.

SHARPEN YOUR MIND & BOOST BRAINPOWER

Mental alertness does not automatically decrease with age.  Plenty of sleep (about 7.5 - 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night), exercise, handling stress & challenging your brain (by learning new information & new concepts) all help to maintain mental sharpness.   Read more

Exploring new or favorite topics is another way to keep your mind alert, with the added benefit of motivating & inspiring you.  It is also a brief escape from the mundane, which makes our brain lazy because we do things automatically without really thinking about them.  Reading & learning something new inject excitement into our day, fueling our imagination & conversation.
